Abstract:
Machine learning and data-driven technologies have shown great potential in bringing intelligent
autonomy to many Internet-of-Things and cyber-physical systems, such as self-driving cars, drones,
robotics, and industrial automation. For safe and correct operation in the real world, these new
capabilities require real-time guarantees: each intelligent task and their complex interactions must be
performed in a timely manner with predictable responses. Doing so effectively calls for innovative
approaches to real-time system design. To deal with high computational demands, heterogeneous
embedded hardware resources should be utilized more efficiently than before. Performance metrics like
throughput, latency, and energy consumption should be optimized by taking into account the temporal
relationship between tasks and exploiting application-level requirements. Real-time guarantees should
be preserved even under dynamic and uncertain environments. This talk will introduce our research
efforts to address challenges arising from intelligent data-driven workloads. I will provide an
illustration of our technical accomplishments and their potential in the context of autonomous systems.

Biography:
Hyoseung Kim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the
University of California, Riverside (UCR). He is also serving as the Chair of the Computer Engineering
Program at UCR. He received the PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie
Mellon University in 2016, and the MS and BS degrees in Computer Science from Yonsei University,
Korea, in 2007 and 2005, respectively. His research interests are in real-time embedded and cyber-
physical systems, especially at the intersection of systems software, parallel computing platforms, and
analytical techniques. His lab aims to enable safe, predictable, and efficient computing under uncertain
environments, which is critical for the continued innovation and widespread usability of intelligent
autonomous technologies including self-driving cars, smart healthcare, and smart agriculture. His
research projects have been supported by NSF, ONR, DoD, DoJ, USDA/NIFA, etc. He is a recipient of the
NSF CAREER Award and the Fulbright Scholarship Award. His research contributions have been
recognized with Best Paper Awards at RTAS and RTCSA, and Best Paper Nominations at EMSOFT and
ICCPS. For more information, please visit https://www.ece.ucr.edu/~hyoseung/.
